A Journey Underground: Tour Details
Your adventure at Hidden River Cave begins with a choice of two tours. The classic, one-hour guided walking tour takes you on a journey through one of the largest cave entrances in the region. You’ll traverse the world’s longest underground swinging bridge and step into the awe-inspiring Sunset Dome, a massive, free-standing cave dome. Along the way, your guide will share stories about the cave’s history, its unique geology, and the fascinating blind creatures that call it home.
For the more adventurous, the three- to four-hour “Off-Trail Cave Adventure Tour” offers a wild caving experience. This tour is not for the faint of heart, as you’ll be crawling, climbing, and getting muddy as you explore the upstream passages. Be prepared to get your hands and knees dirty as you see the cave from a perspective few ever get to witness.
From Pollution to Preservation: The Cave’s History
The history of Hidden River Cave is as dramatic as its underground passages. In the early 1900s, the cave was a vital part of the town of Horse Cave. Its underground river provided both drinking water and the hydroelectricity that powered the town—making Horse Cave the first town in Kentucky to have incandescent lights. It was also a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors with its stunning formations and “curious creatures of darkness.”
However, decades of using the cave system as a dumping ground for sewage and industrial waste led to its demise. By the 1950s, the once-pristine cave was so polluted that foul odors permeated the entire town, and the cave life had all but vanished.
For nearly 50 years, the cave remained closed. But in 1987, the American Cave Conservation Association (ACCA) stepped in, relocating its headquarters to Horse Cave. With the implementation of a new regional sewage treatment system, the pollution stopped, and the cave began a remarkable recovery. In 1992, Hidden River Cave and the American Cave Museum reopened to the public, becoming a living testament to the power of environmental conservation. Today, it stands as a celebrated environmental success story, educating visitors on the delicate balance of karst geology and the importance of protecting our planet’s natural resources.
