Palms Book State Park is a hidden gem of a park located in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The area is a popular destination for adventure travelers and nature enthusiasts. Palms Book is an often overlooked attraction in the area. With several other more well known sights garnering most of the tourist traffic. Palms Book is located 7 miles from Indian Lake State Park, and just a short drive from the famous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The Upper Peninsula is also home to an impressive array of the Midwest’s most impressive waterfalls!

Palms Book has one thing those iconic locations don’t. Palms Book State Park is home to one of the most impressive fresh-water natural springs in the world. This is easily one of Michigan’s most alluring natural attractions, and its gorgeous!

Kitch-iti-kipi Spring is Michigan’s largest freshwater spring, spanning 200 feet across and 40 feet deep. The flow continues throughout the year at a constant 45 degrees Fahrenheit, gushing more than 10,000 gallons of water a minute from fissures in the underlying limestone.

The most popular attraction within the park is the self-guided observation raft, visitors are guided to vantage points overlooking fascinating underwater features and fantasies. Ancient tree trunks, lime-encrusted branches and fat trout can be seen as they slip through crystal waters far below. Clouds of sand kept in constant motion by gushing waters create ever-changing shapes and forms – a challenge to the imagination. The self-guided observation raft and the trail leading to it are ADA-accessible.

Palms Book State Park is located at M-149 (a mile north of the Co Rd 455 junction) in Manistique Michigan. Signage in the area can be a bit confusing, on your way to the park, you may see signs referring to The Big Spring, or Palms Book, or Kitch-iti-kipi. All of these are the same place, the name is used interchangeably in the area.
