A Manatee Sanctuary and More
Blue Spring is perhaps best known as a designated manatee refuge and the winter home to a significant population of the endangered West Indian Manatee. From approximately mid-November through March, hundreds of these gentle giants congregate in the spring’s warm, 73-degree Fahrenheit waters, seeking refuge from the colder St. Johns River. Visitors during this season can witness this incredible spectacle from elevated boardwalks, offering unparalleled viewing opportunities of these magnificent “sea cows.” It’s important to note that during manatee season, the spring run is closed to all in-water activities to ensure the manatees’ safety and protection.
