This tour of Canyonlands National Park begins in the middle of Moab, where you’ll meet your guides and hop in the comfortable 4×4 off-road vehicle. The drive to the Chesler Park area is approximately two hours, as it’s located out in the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park. The reward for the lengthy drive, however, is sweeping vistas of desert landscapes you’d expect to see in brochures, where multicolored rock formations emerge from the sun-scorched earth. You’ll explore the ancient rock formations and weave through the cactus, looking for wildlife like mule deer, lizards, or herds of bighorn sheep. At Elephant Hill, watch as your guide skillfully maneuvers what’s known as one of Utah’s most challenging 4×4 trails. You’ll pass Devil’s Kitchen and Devil’s Lane before emerging at SOB Hill. Towards the middle of the day, you’ll enjoy a tasty, buffet-style lunch at a panoramic viewpoint, and then be given the option of hiking along the dusty Joint Trail. The 3-mile (4.8km) loop leads towards the Chesler Park meadows, which are often considered as one of the park’s most spectacularly scenic spots. The trail itself weaves through towering boulders and an intriguing network of canyons, and even though the path is well groomed and the trail is well defined, it’s still a hike that’s sufficiently challenging for even the most experienced of hikers. If you’d prefer to skip the Joint Trail hike, you’re allowed more time to photograph the views surrounding your scenic lunch spot, before continuing on in the 4×4 vehicle to remote sections of the park. At the end of the day, having scoured the furthest and most isolated corners of Canyonlands National Park, your guide drops you off in the middle of Moab from where the tour began. This trip takes about 10 hours and costs $353.19.

On the way we will stop by the Tree of Life sculpture, where travelers can choose to take pictures if they would like. Upon leaving the sculpture, we will make our way to the Salt Flats, where travelers can spend their time taking pictures, walking the salt flats, etc. The travel out and back is about 100 miles and will take roughly 1.5 hours each way. Metaphor – The Tree of Utah, sometimes called the Tree of Life, is an 87-foot-tall sculpture that was created by the Swedish artist Karl Momen in the 1980s and dedicated in 1986. The sculpture, which is constructed mainly of concrete, consists of a squarish ‘trunk’ holding up six spheres that are coated with natural rock and minerals native to Utah. There are also several hollow sphere segments on the ground around the base. The sculpture currently has a fence surrounding the base to protect people from falling tiles. Inscribed on the plaque are the words from Ode to Joy by Friedrich Schiller; also used as the chorus of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. It has been said that Momen was moved to create the 87-foot-tall (27 m) tree after having a vision of a tree while driving across the desolate Bonneville Salt Flats. Following the dedication of this work of art, Momen donated the sculpture to the State of Utah and returned to Sweden. For more information or to book this trip, click here.

White Pocket, a group of domes and ridges covering an area of one square mile, below a larger mesa lined by similar rocks. A pocket, in this sense, refers to a relatively small area of land markedly different to its surroundings, which here, like most of the plateau, are sandy plains sparsely covered by bushes and small trees. White, or light grey is the dominant rock color, in contrast to the red of the Coyote Buttes, but the general features are similar – swirling, thin-layered strata, adjacent layers of contrasting color, and curious erosive features. Other colorful pockets are found further south and east on the plateau, some also with an official name but most unrecognized. There are several dozen locations, all with the potential to have photogenic formations. For more information or to book this trip, click here.
