Oak Mountain is Alabama’s Largest Park, And There Is Plenty To See And Do

From its humble beginning as a 940-acre park atop Double Oak Mountain established by the Alabama State Lands Act of 1927, Oak Mountain State Park has grown to 11,861 acres making it Alabama’s largest state park. With the largest land-area, one of the widest varieties of outdoor activities of any state park, and its proximity to Birmingham, Oak Mountain is a perfect stop while traveling to and from the state’s largest city. Topping it all off is the park’s stunning physical landscape, which alone makes for an unforgettable experience.

Mountain biking, horseback riding, and hiking are three of the most popular activities at the park. With more than 100 miles of trails, visitors have plenty of options to choose from be it a short loop or an overnight trip. The Red Trail has even been included on the International Mountain Biking Association’s (IMBA) list of EPIC rides.

Nestled in a large cul-de-sac which borders Beaver Lake and surrounded by rolling hills topped with the long lived and majestic Longleaf Pines, the campground is a favorite spot for families to get away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world. The campground is open for camping year-round.

Oak Mountain State Park offers ten fully equipped cabins that are open year-round. All cabins are set up for light housekeeping with linens furnished. Each cabin has two bedrooms with 1- King bed and 2-Queen beds (MAXIMUM CAPACITY 6), one bath, a kitchenette with utensils and cookware, central heat and air, porch, grill and picnic table. Dish Network and a flat screen TV are located in the living room of each cabin, and all cabins are equipped with wireless internet access. Two Vehicles max per cabin.

Oak Mountain is the perfect place for a family getaway or for your next epic hike. The park is amazing and the campgrounds and cabins make extended stay more comfortable.

Cathedral Caverns in Alabama Has A Beautiful Campground and Epic Cave Tour

Originally called Bat Cave, Cathedral Caverns was opened to the public by Jacob Gurley in the 1950’s. The cave was renamed because of its cathedral-like appearance.  Purchased by the state in 1987, it was opened as a State Park in the summer of 2000.  Cathedral Caverns State Park is located at 637 Cave Rd, in Woodville, Alabama. The first feature most people notice about Cathedral Caverns is its massive entrance. The huge opening measures 126 feet wide and 25 feet high, a possible world record for commercial caves.

The grand entrance is only the beginning. Inside the cavern are some of the most beautiful formations Mother Nature has ever created including “Goliath”- one of the largest stalagmites in the world measuring 45 feet tall and 243 feet in circumference.   Cathedral Caverns features many amazing sites:  a “caveman” perched atop a flowstone wall, a “frozen” waterfall, a large stalagmite forest and a most improbable stone formation – a stalagmite that is 27 feet tall and 3 inches wide!

The cave maintains a comfortable 60 degrees temperature year round; which makes it an excellent field trip for school, church or other groups. The park itself encompasses 493 acres, and there are marked hiking trails available for those wanting to enjoy the outdoors.

The Park now offers improved campsites along with primitive tent camping areas.  A bathhouse is available and located near the campsites.  A back country campsite is available for those wishing to backpack and hike in. There are 2 large picnic pavilions available near the Welcome Center.

Bucks Pocket in Alabama is Known For Its Incredible Views and Epic Hiking Trails

Buck’s Pocket State Park reopened on June 16th, 2020 with a renovated campground and a new ORV(Off-Road Vehicles) trail. These amenities create a family-friendly destination for campers, off-road enthusiasts, and vacationers. Bucks Pocket State Park is located at 393 Co Rd 174, in Grove Oak, Alabama. The campground features 23 campsites with 13 of those being sewer hook-up sites, 4 of those being pull-through sites, and all of those providing water and electricity. Each of these sites features a 16′ x 60′ concrete camper pad, picnic table, fire pit, and grill. There are also 11 primitive campsites located within the interior of the campground and more are planned for the future. Backcountry sites are also planned for the future. A bathhouse, a separate ADA bathhouse, and a dump station are provided.

Bucks Pocket State Park is one of the most peaceful & tranquil places in Alabama. The park is a pocket of beauty atop Sand Mountain’s plateau. Known for the sweeping views of its rugged, seemingly untouched landscape provided from the heights of Point Rock.

Hiking Trails are plentiful in the park. With 15 miles of trails you will surely find a favorite. Maybe a short hike on the Indian House Trail to the rock overhangs used by the Indians for shelter, or a longer hike down to the lake for some awesome fishing on the Primitive Campground Trail; or up the mountain to the Point Rock Overlook where you could see a bald eagle flying and a spectacular view. All the trails hold a new adventure each time you visit.

David Crockett State Park In Tennessee Is A Hidden Gem You Need To See To Believe

The 1,319-acre park has a museum staffed during the summer months, with exhibits depicting Crockett’s life here and a water-powered grist mill. David Crockett State Park is located at 1400 West Gaines in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee. For more information, click here.

In addition to the paved bike trail, the park has more than ten miles of hiking trails. The trails offer scenic vistas of Shoal Creek and Crockett Falls, limestone bluffs, abundant wildlife, and serene forest. The Overlook Trail runs parallel to the Shoal Creek Trail.

During the summer months, boating and fishing are popular. Lake Lindsey is ideal for fishing and watercraft rentals. Paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, pedal boats, and fishing boats are available for rent.

David Crockett State Park has seven cabins near beautiful Lake Lindsey. Each cabin is completely furnished with two bedrooms, two baths, a full kitchen, and a covered patio. These unique modern accommodations were designed and built with energy efficiency in mind.

For campers, the park’s two campgrounds contain a total of 96 sites, equipped with a table and fire ring/grill combo. Campground #1 has 32 sites with 30-amp electric and water hookups and 12 sites with 20-30-50 amp electrical and water hookups. Campground #2 has 20-, 30-, 50-amp electrical and water hookups. Campground #1 also has 10 primitive (walk-in) campsites.

The park has an onsite restaurant that overlooks 40-acre scenic Lake Lindsey. The restaurant features excellent menu items, including local favorites.

Grand Mere State Park In Michigan Has Beautiful Dunes And Almost 2 Miles Of Beach

Grand Mere State Park is characterized by magnificent sand dunes, deep blowouts, two inland lakes and half a mile of Lake Michigan shoreline, accessible by the park’s two trails. Grand Mere State Park is located in Stevensville Michigan. For more information, click here

The park has numerous activities, guests can enjoy, including, swimming, hiking, picnicking, a boat launch, and even cross-country skiing.

Grand Mere has an impressive sandy beach, which checks in at almost two miles in length. The beaches can only be reached on foot by climbing over the parks sand dunes.

The 985-acre park is mostly wooded and has three geologically ancient inland lakes, left behind as the glaciers receded during the last ice age.  At one time there were five such lakes, but two of the lakes have disappeared as a result of aquatic succession, and the remaining three can be seen to be slowly disappearing today.

Grand Pere is located adjacent to Interstate 94. Protected from Lake Michigan by the dunes to the west, the park has many natural features not found throughout the rest of the state.
