An Unbelievable Park And An Unforgettable Vacation Destination

Arches National Park has over 2,000 acres just waiting to be explored! The park is located in southeast Utah, five miles north of Moab on US 191.  For more information, click here.

Arches National Park is a wonderland of red rocks and blue sky. The red rock landscape at Arches might feel timeless, dream-like, or even other-worldly. People have documented over 2,000 natural stone arches within park boundaries. You can see arches, towers, pinnacles, and balanced rocks from the paved park roads. Take a hike, and you can see even more.

Balanced Rock, one of the most iconic features in the park, stands a staggering 128 feet (39m) tall. While this formation may appear to be an epic balancing act, it’s actually not balanced at all. The slick rock boulder of Entrada Sandstone sits attached to its eroding pedestal of Dewey Bridge mudstone. The exposure of these two rock strata layers are ideal for the formation of arches and balanced rocks. Balanced Rock defies gravity but this won’t always be the case. Eventually, the 3,600 ton (over 4 million kg) boulder will come tumbling down as the erosional process continues to shape the landscape. In the winter of 1975-76, Balanced Rock’s smaller sibling “Chip-Off-the-Old-Block” collapsed proving that there is no better time than the present to see this awe-inspiring giant.

Plan on spending at least a few hours in the park, exploring the scenic drive and several of the viewpoints and short trails. If time permits, longer hikes lead to many spectacular rock formations, or consider attending a ranger-led program to learn more about this special place. Guided walks and/or evening programs occur daily, spring through fall.

Arches National Park is normally open year-round, 24 hours a day. Fees apply. The park is very busy between March and October. To avoid traffic, we recommend entering the park before 8 am or after 3 pm.

This Gorgeous Waterfall State Park Is One For The Bucket List

Rifle Falls State Park’s lush vegetation and waterfalls have attracted photographers and movie crews from around the country who come to capture the area’s unique scenery. Rifle Falls State Park is located at 5775 Highway 325 in Rifle, Colorado. For more information, click here.

The falls is a lush area of trees and greenery kept moist by the spray of the cascading triple waterfall. Picnicking near the falls is very popular. Mysterious limestone caves beneath the falls entice spelunkers and other curious visitors to explore their dark depths.

Rifle Falls State Park has 13 drive-in and seven walk-in campsites that sit to the south along East Rifle Creek. In 1998, the park underwent a facelift: new pavement, picnic tables, interpretive signs and increased handicapped access. “Roughing it” is a little easier with electricity at many campsites. Walk-in tent sites and sites with electric hookups are also available in the winter.

Keep in mind that Rifle Falls is a VERY busy place during the summer months!  Many people want to see the beauty that the park has to offer, however, parking is very limited and they do turn people away when the parking area is full.  As always I suggest visiting during the weekdays to avoid crowds.

Rifle Falls’ trails are the closest you’ll get to hiking in the tropics in Colorado. Three hiking trails meander through the park providing access up to and above the falls, along East Rifle Creek, and to the fish hatchery. Around the falls you will find a lush area of trees and greenery kept moist by the spray of the cascading triple waterfall. With a 70-foot change in elevation, hiking is fairly easy.

Rainbow, brown and cutthroat trout are found in East Rifle Creek, which flows through Rifle Falls. Fish up to 19 inches long have been taken, with 6- to 9- inch fish being the average size.

Rifle Falls State Park is an amazing park to hike, camp and explore! The falls are absolutely gorgeous and the trail system is fantastic too. This is a place I highly recommend visiting.
